One Room Challenge Week 5: Painting the Walls and LightingThis week feels exciting because we finally made a bit more progress on the Boy's Nature Bedroom, you may remember last week, when I narrowed it down to 4 paint colors. Now, with only 2 weeks left of the One Room Challenge, I am eager to get the walls painted so that we can begin to move furniture into the room. After careful debate, we finally decided on a new wall color for the room. hooray! We wanted something soft and light that would accent the photography. We had originally considered painting the room a soft white. So without further ado, the color that we chose is: Gray Owl by Benjamin Moore. Now, I'm convinced that we have to paint the trim and door in Cloud White, a softer slightly warm white that will not look yellow or beige.
In a twist to the plot, we decided to do an accent wall in a deeper color. Many of you responded to our Instagram poll with Blue Dusk and I do like how it looks on one wall!

ORC Boys Bedroom Before Photos Week 3Last Thursday, I shared some exciting news! I announced that I would be participating in the One Room Challenge as a guest participant along with over 200 designers across the country. Awesome, right?! Lucky for me, I stumbled upon this challenge when I saw a designer from my Children's bedrooms board had participated in the past. It was a timely discovery as the challenge dates synced up perfectly with our room design timeline. Last week, I relied on your feedback on the product boards for our Boys Nature Bedroom to help me select the furnishings. Now for Week 3 of the challenge, I will be sharing the before pictures of my son's nursery turned guest room. But first, a little background on the space. Over the summer, we had been temporarily using his nursery as a guest room for 3 reasons. 1. We had family visiting from out of state 2. We often sleep in our 2nd bedroom b/c that room stays the coolest with a/c through the L.A. summer 3. He (my son) actually still sleeps with us 70% of the time, so there you have it! Below, you can see how his room looked in June as a guest room and then, more recently this week. We promised ourselves that after the weather cooled down, we would re-organize his space and return all of his toys to the room, as they are currently scattered around the house in our living room and bedroom which is driving us, (me) crazy! We decided to do a twin bed with a trundle, so that family can still come over and spend the night. Our current guest bed is a queen, so our goal is to open up the floor space in the room by using a space saving bed. We are probably going to keep the white dresser, which is bolted to the wall as-is. To the right of the dresser, you can see the corner of my husband's desk. He often works from home and this space doubles as his office, when he does. As you can see, we have a lot going on in this space! One day, in the not so distant future we hope to have a 3 bedroom place, but for now, we will just have to get creative with the space we have. One thing that I kind of like about this room is the nursery bookshelf that we made using photo ledges from IKEA. It is actually an inexpensive and low profile way to display a variety of books! We may keep that part the same. We did decide, which bed to order. I have a feeling that some of you will be very excited about the one that we selected, while others might be disappointed? I asked for your opinion on my Facebook page and on Instagram and the vote was split about 50/50. Many of you made very good points about each product board, which made the decision that much more difficult. Since, the new bed has already shipped, you will be finding out about that selection soon! I will say that in a way, I took your advice. On another note, this fan needs to go! Unless anyone has a creative way to update it? If you do, please share in the comments. Last, but not least, I will tackle paint selection, lighting, and visual accessories like photography.
I plan to share those things all Week 4... Then there will be only 2 weeks left to install and full style the space. You can follow along the One Room Challenge with me every Thursday. I look forward to seeing what all the other designers are up to this week. If you would like to see Week 2: Product Boards or Week 1: Inspiration Boards, you can take a peak! Boys Nature Bedroom Products and Design BoardsOk, so it's better late than never right?! Are you ready to see the product boards for my son's nature-inspired bedroom? I really need your help making a decision about the bed, especially if you have a strong opinion about one option or the other. You might remember the Boys Bedroom Inspiration boards that I revealed on at the beginning of the week. I loved all of the rooms that I showed there from the vintage inspiration to the bohemian textiles, and playful flourishes in the design. For our son's room, I am building the space around the bed and the artwork. The bed will be a twin bed and it needs to have a trundle below to accommodate overnight guests. So that is an absolute requirement. The bed design will serve as an anchor, as the largest piece of furniture in the room. Since my son loves spending time outdoors and in nature, I wanted to use large scale photography would be an awesome way to bring the outdoors into the room. I have a gorgeous piece of photography to share with you of Icelandic horses that I had printed using Photowall, a company that specializes in digital prints on canvas. I can't wait for you to see how that piece turned out, once I get it all stretched onto the frame! He loved ponies as a toddler and still does. So without further ado, here is Option A: Neel's Mid-century Modern Nature RetreatI definitely want to put a photo of him in the room too~ this one is from last year and he loves looking back at younger versions of himself. This option feels more grown up and sophisticated to me. I am also a big fan of mixing walnut and gray. His current dresser is white and in a separate area of the room (and bolted to the wall;) so it will have to stay for now. Resources for Option A:
There is also Option B: Neel's Scandinavian Rainbow RoomOne thing to know, is that he currently loves rainbows. This board is even more playful and speaks to his current love of color and rainbows, which according to him, are for boys;) This design revolves around light natural wood tones and white shelving. Also he loves the color wheel artwork designed by me for Minted.com Ironically, he can be one of my biggest fans but also my biggest critic;) Which room design do you like best?

I hope that you will follow along with me there! I would love, in some way, to combine the 2 rooms. What are your thoughts about that? Do you have a product board that you prefer over the other? I'd love to hear from you, in the comments. |
