Week 4: SPA Main Bath Midcentury Shower and Tile Design

Main Bath Midcentury Shower & mosaic Tile Design

Week 4 has been exciting and there has been some progress! Also, disclaimer: All the photos that you are about to see look totally 80s due to the purple drywall and the hunter green shower/sealant being used inside the shower. This is according to my contractor a new technique that is easier than hot mopping. The effects are stunning;)

This week's journal is a smorgasbord of photos that reveal some tiling progress since Week 3.
You might remember that we included a hall closet into the bath and we are now converting it to a 36" x 36" shower, to open it up a bit, we created a pony wall where a half sheet of glass will sit dividing the tub and the shower space.

So scroll on down and enjoy! At the end perhaps you can help me to answer a burning question!

Our contractor removed the original arch and created a very slight arch in it's place (I'm not totally sure about this, but I'm going with it).

In Week 2, I revealed our tiling choices: Mid-century White and Island Blue from our road trip to Heath Ceramics in Sausalito. I loved driving up to the showroom and exploring all the beautiful tiling choices. We chose, Island Blue for tiling an accent wall  behind the freestanding tub~ I was so excited when I saw this starting to emerge. We are doing a stitch mosaic pattern basically arranges in a long-short pattern of 2" x 6" subway tile.

For the shower, we chose Mid-century white. I am loving the 6" x 6" subway tiles these days. One idea is to offset the subway, which looks fantastic, but we chose a grid because of the other Island Blue mosaic. I feel like the grid is pretty modern, and perhaps a little less busy than if we had offset the tile.

From this angle, you can really see the variation in each white square tile which makes it so interesting!

Now, it's time for decisions and I need you to weigh-in!. Originally, I had planned to make that whole back wall Island blue- all the way up to the ceiling, but now, I am considering only doing a half wall that wraps the freestanding tub on 3 sides, like more of a nook. If you have an strong feeling or opinion on this, I would love to hear which idea you like the best!

Lastly, I am sharing a sneak peak of the white oak bath caddy that I am working on! I am incorporating natural White Oak in 2 places in the bath. As you may notice, I have a deep appreciation for artisanal ceramics, woodwork and craftsmanship of all kinds. In fact, I can't wait to share the full bath caddy tutorial with you next Thursday:) In the mean time, let's take a peak at all the other fabulous ORC participants who are working on this challenge.
