ORC Week 6: Eclectic California Master BEdroom RevealOver the past six weeks, I have been working steadily to create a Laid Back California Master Bedroom as a part of the Spring One Room Challenge, and now it's finally time for the big reveal! In a perfect world, I would have preferred to photo shoot our new Master Bedroom in the morning before noon because that is when the natural light is softly filtering into the room. The afternoon sun light can appear harsh on this side of our place by 3 p.m. Nonetheless, the room just came together in the nick of time and I did a mini photo shoot. I plan to snap a few more pics of the place first thing in the morning to show how the wall color changes based on the light in the room. One of my favorite aspects of our room is all of the greenery that is growing outside of our windows. I must say, that I love chilling in here in the afternoons. For this photo shoot, I followed Linda's guest guidelines and I tried to shoot 10-15 photos of the room, which capture all the little details for you to see. When I started working on our Laid Back California Master Bedroom, we had a few anchor pieces of furniture already. I began with our less than 1 year old bed, our white vertical bookshelf and this antique dresser below. I discovered that the dresser, a score from Craigslist, turned out to be built in the 1890's. While, I refinished it's look, I tracked down the Michigan based furniture business on the metal name plate inside the drawer a few years back. The dresser with it's diamond veneer lends character and is the only antique piece in the room. Read on to see all of the eclectic details that make this room, minimal, peaceful and unique, plus the list of resources for you! Since I am a Mom, visual artist and product designer, I needed for my bedroom to be free of clutter and visually soothing. I brought back these white and gold block printed curtains from India, 2 years ago and I recently created this triangle pendant using natural indigo and scrap linen from my Shibori classes. Doesn't this bedding look cozy, plus make you want to sleep in all day? After pulling this all together, I could barely remove myself from the bed this morning;) How about you? I went with a white linen duvet cover and matching linen shams. The long ivory lumbar pillow is a piece that I had created custom on my last trip to India! I still have one more left, if you'd like to snag it. Then, I casually layered a throw on top of the bed for an added layer of texture and comfort. The ceiling fan is the one focal point of the room. It feels both traditional and modern with white blades and brass finishes. Ultimately, I decided on the matte brass which repeats again in the curtain rods. Only one thing you might know from my Instagram story, is the ceiling globe arrived punctured and paper thin, so it needs to be replaced. Until the new one comes on Friday, I will be using all of the my best Photoshop skills to try to convince you that the puncture didn't happen. I'm curious about which pillow you like best in the space, A). the white lumber or B). the blue stripe batik below? I may simply rotate them. While I intentionally left this wall a blank canvas, I am still searching for a rug that I can throw down on this side of the bed after summer. As many of you remember from Week 5, I did a simple DIY on a seagrass basket by adding some wool tassels. Also, I tackled a much more complex DIY when I decided to build custom matching walnut nightstands for my husband and I. Since, we moved in together eleven years ago, it has always been a "grown-up" goal of mine. I loved the idea of having a pair of nightstands that matched to bring the perfect organization and balance to the room. I knew that buying both nightstands could become quite pricey and for this project, I wanted to be economical, so that I could afford to tie together as many details as possible. In creating these nightstands, I glued-up much of my scrap wood. I drew up the measurements and the design. Later, I took my glue-ups to a hardwood mill for cutting. The final step was to bind together all of the parts essentially building a glamorous floating box with a ledge. One thing that surprised my husband, is that he thought the nightstands were meant to face in, while I had always intended for them to face out. Every morning, I wake up and feel thankful. I wanted the nightstand to be minimal, so I placed only the essentials on top. I know that I will going to enjoy waking up to these mood enhancing crystals. I found a new bulb for my salt lamp, added a selenite tower, blue calcite pyramid, and clear quartz crystals. I have to say my blue calcite pyramid is totally my favorite. I placed the smaller crystals in a little plaster shell dish. I likely will store a book or Kindle on the ledge of the nightstand to stow away reading materials. Once again, I want to say a special thank you to Linda of Calling it Home for dreaming up this amazingly fun and inspiring challenge!
