Kits for makers & painters
Kits can be an entertaining way to spend an afternoon- especially over the winter holidays. The kits that I have shared below are perfect for the winter holidays, and can even be used to create gifts for others to share the love. Bijou kits- is a mom owned L.A. based business. The Botanical dye kit is from my own textile studio and includes a how-to video instruction along with materials, and a blank mask to dye. Last but not least, watercolor postcards- can go out in the mail for friends and family across the country. What better way to nurture those you love with a beautiful message?
I find students usually have colored pencils on had, but sometimes are in need of oil pastels. I recommend Mungyo pastels because they have a range of color, good quality and are thick (thus break less). Need other ideas to encourage a prolific artist? Have them write and illustrate a story- that then becomes a book. If you do this- be sure to share it with us! Also, for the older artist who loves to sketch and play with color palettes, grab a pack of the first highlighters and let their creativity run wild!
Sculpture: made by hand
During this time, I have found our sculpture workshops to be incredibly therapeutic and relaxing. You might be surprised to know that Crayola Air-dry clay is one of the best air-dry clays that I have found on the market? Other brands that I use are Amaco and Laguna clay (recommended to me by a sculptor). Laguna is "real" clay that can also be used in a kiln. For our upcoming clay workshop, students only need a the regular self-hardening clay.. One thing that can be surprising, is how easy it can be to set up a table and sculpt from home.
